Reflection on part 3

Readers already familiar with the remainder of Revelation – and I hope that is all of you – may be puzzled at this juncture as to why the description of the activity of the two witnesses in Jerusalem is not left until we learn more about the monster that murders them in parts 4 and 5. My own view is that this has been done to accentuate for us the relationship between the beginning and end of part 3 – the silence in heaven for half an hour and the three and a half days while the witnesses lie unburied in the streets of Jerusalem. The author wants us to dwell on the awfulness of living in a Nietzschean world where God has been finally pronounced dead. After all, that is precisely the world that Richard Dawkins thinks we already do live in.

We should also note that the brief mention of the monster in 11:7 in part 3 and the lengthy description of it in part 4 is a further example of what we noted earlier – that something briefly mentioned in one part becomes central to the next part.
